Blown Head gasket driving back

Im looking at buying a 2000 subaru outback for the winter as my little rwd car cannot handle the snow and will garage it. I found a great manual outback but the thing is smoking out the tailpipe, most likely head gasket failure. I would 100% plan to replace the head gasket but the issue is I dont have access to a trailer right now and its 2 hours away. Can i safely drive it home and then repair it without any major engine failure?
