Leaving a Comment Saying You Found a Character OOC is Unhelpful Critique (Most of the Time)

Discussion

Unless an author specifcally asks for input on this for there story I find this sort of comment very unhelpful.

~90% of the time I encounter it in the wild it tends to be the reader inputting their own headcanons or wanting an author to cater to them.

Then there are writers who want to tell the story they want to tell. That purposefully made this decision for their story. Here is an author's note from a fic where the writer changed a character's motive from malice to neglect and several commenters pointed out it wasn't canon.

Look everyone. I understand if this story’s explanation/headcanon/what-have-you clashes with how certain people feel about it. I understand that some people might feel annoyed by it or disagree with it or want to see me as the author acknowledge or rewrite certain things about it to make them feel more secure or at ease with it all or just want to come snap at me for it and go down into the comments to let me know just how wrong I am about what I’ve written in this chapter.

DO NOT DO THIS. FULL STOP

If it bothers you that much, please feel free to stop reading. I wish you the best, I hope you have a great day and we will all go on. But I am quite finished with comments needing to explain to me how I’m wrong or explain to me the correct way to have handled this or any other variation of it.

Lastly, a fic where the MC is basically an OC wearing a canon character name tag can still be an excellent story. Or the joys of crack fic where some aspects of the character are very purposefully OOC in a way to create joy/discussion. Fanfic is about haivng fun. Some people enjoy building lego models based on the instructions they came with while others like to go crazy with their own structures. There is no wrong way to do it.

Calling a character OOC and expecting the author to use it to make edits to a story is a heavy writing demand. Even for a minor character in the narrative it can involve massive rewrites for the author to cope with the change in motive or plot.

Agree with my take? Disagree? Do you solicit in-character critique from people besides your beta? Have you received comments about characters being OOC and have you found them helpful?
