I Cry - their most experimental track?
I’ve just been listening to I Cry and I think it’s probably their most experimental track (along with Chances, but that’s a cover).
I think you pretty well know what you’re gonna get with Westlife but I Cry is such a departure from that. For a start, it’s in a minor key which immediately gives it this dark, brooding feel. It reminds me of the sort of thing that Jim Steinman would have written for Bonnie Tyler or Meat Loaf.
The Spanish guitar is brilliant. I think the orchestration honestly sounds like some of Arctic Monkeys’ later stuff at times.
It’s a proper song that definitely has some kind of musical merit. It’s not a chartbuster like their stuff so often is (which I also love btw).
But yeah, I think it’s time we put some respect on I Cry’s name!
What do you think?
