How many joints does the narrator in the song “Smoke Two Joints” smoke?

NSFW

Seeing that Frank Sinatra “New York, New York” post yesterday reminded me of a debate my friends and I would have back in college while getting high:

How many joints does the narrator of the Sublime song “Smoke Two Joints” smoke in a given day? I’m aware it’s a cover, but the lyrics in the Sublime version are slightly different and that’s the one we were listening to at the time, so that’s the version I’m going with for this.

Here’s the lyrics:

“I smoke two joints in the morning I smoke two joints at night I smoke two joints in the afternoon It makes me feel alright”

(So we’re up to six for sure by now, but here’s where it would get contentious)

“I smoke two joints in time of peace And two in time of war I smoke two joints before I smoke two joints And then I smoke two more”

(So first of all, is he saying he smokes an additional four joints for time of peace AND time of war? Or is he saying he smokes another two joints, regardless of if it is a time of peace or a time of war?

THEN, does the “I smoke two joints before I smoke two joints and then I smoke two more” imply every previous two joints is now SIX joints? I had a friend who would insist this just mean he was smoking an infinite number of joints at all times, but I don’t know that I agree)

I would say this is a VERY stupid question, but we had fun arguing about it forever ago so I’m curious what others think.

Thanks!
