Asking another golfer's handicap?

Why do other random golfers frequently ask what my handicap is during a round? It happens almost every round. I've been playing golf for almost 30 years. I don't remember this being a thing growing up. It would never occur to me to ask someone what their handicap is. I can tell if you are legit or not on the first hole.

I don't keep score (golf is too frustrating to focus on your score). Sometimes I am probably around even on easier courses, other times I am probably in the mid/upper 70s on bad days. I do keep track of GIRs (my goal is always 12 of 18). I do crush the ball with moonshot trajectories, so I guess I appear a lot better than I actually am and they want to say they played with someone with a plus handicap? I have no idea. Any thoughts?
