Holy fuck does having a sibling below the age of 12 reinforce my already solidified plan to never have kids
So I ate breakfast in my room, which is in the basement because room had to be made for them (singular, btw. if plural I'd probably teleport at that point) after they became a toddler, which was a few years ago, since they're 5. When I went to take my plate upstairs, they were talking very loudly (it was loud even with my earbuds in) to me about something I couldn't care less about while following me for that whole duration. I was also refilling my cup, so as you could imagine, I couldn't get out of the kitchen fast enough. I head back downstairs to my room, they're shouting at me from the top of the stairway. I go into my room and lock it. since it was silent for a few minutes, I was starting to think it wasn't even necessary to lock.
Until I get a series of knocks. I take out an earbud, it's just the 5-year-old telling me to open the door, probably just to tell me more about what I was told not even 5 minutes before while being followed around. I think "boy am I glad I locked the door". While I debate whether I should tell them to go away or not, the little shit unlocks my door, which has been cursed with the shittiest, most simplistic lock of all the doors in my (parents') house, second to my bathroom's door, which doesn't have a lock at all. I knew I would have to do something about that lock eventually, and probably before I'd have things together so I can move out, but DAMN, I thought I'd at least have time to get my (HS) diploma first. Apparently the fuck not.
I don't know what it is, but holy shit I can't stand younger family members even worse than I can stand other people's kids. It took me awhile to get along with another sibling of mine until they were like 11-12. But nope! Here's another person you have to restart that process with!
I interact with that sibling the least (as of now) out of everyone else in my household, yet I still feel like I'm gonna go insane! If I'm bothered this much because of that alone, then being a parent full-time would be absolutely lethal. Reduced privacy, and most of your time revolves around a set of chore-like actions to meet the wants and needs of someone with more energy than you can keep up with, let alone handle? I'd rather have my reproductive organs removed without anesthesia or pain relief than have this risk just sitting in my body.
I feel like my privacy is more-or-less nonexistent because the 5yr old hasn't been taught the idea that a locked door means "do not enter". I could just buy a new doorknob and figure that stuff out, but I know bearing a few minutes to teach them that would be more helpful in the long run.
Above all, having siblings under the age of 12 kind of gives you an (involuntary) demo of parenthood, and for way more reasons than what's stated above. I'm not sure if this detail would help with why I have the aforementioned opinion, but after my youngest sibling was born, I was the secondary caregiver for a couple of years.
