Please explain Figurine substitute origins[Lotm V8]

I've seen paper figurine substitute mysticism being used multiple times and I've wondered where is its origins and what's the actual practice they used? I've tried researching but I'm not using the correct trigger words for getting any good info. Can someone please explain its origin, the practice and the beliefs of this practice? Or just listing better key words to help me better research it.
