The air in the casino was thick with the stench of cheap alcohol and the lingering scent of regret. A cacophony of laughter and the clinking of glasses surrounded me, creating a dissonant symphony that only heightened my discomfort.
My fiancé, Wayne Webber, stood there, his face a mask of disbelief as he processed the weight of his recent loss—a bet that had spiraled out of control.
Beside him, his childhood sweetheart, Olivia Prescott, clung to his arm like a vine, her fingers tracing patterns on his sleeve. With a mischievous gleam in her eye, she gestured toward the gaudy neon-lit wedding chapel that loomed across the room, a beacon of impulsive decisions and reckless abandon.
“Wayne—You lost…” Her voice dripped with sugary sweetness, but her gaze was sharp, piercing through the haze of the casino and locking onto mine with an unmistakable challenge.
“So your punishment is… come with me to that chapel and let’s get hitched. You’re not chicken, right?” She leaned in closer, her breath warm against his ear, her words laced with playful malice.
The raucous laughter of Wayne’s friends erupted around us, filling the space with a boisterous energy that made my stomach churn.
“Dude, don’t be a pussy!” one of them hollered, slapping Wayne on the back as if to encourage him further.
“Yeah, man, just do it!” another chimed in, their voices blending into a chorus of reckless bravado.
“It’s just for fun. I’m sure Nora won’t make a big deal out of it,” a third added, as if my feelings were an afterthought in this theatrical performance.
Wayne’s expression flickered, uncertainty clouding his features as he opened his mouth, perhaps to protest or to defend me.
But then, in a sudden shift, Olivia released her hold on him and stepped back, her demeanor shifting from playful to anxious. She clasped her hands together, her fingers trembling slightly. As she glanced at me, her eyes glistened with unshed tears, betraying a vulnerability that felt all too calculated.
“Never mind… I think Nora’s upset,” she said, her voice quivering as if she were the one wronged in this scenario.
“I forgot Wayne’s yours now…” The tremor in her tone was almost theatrical, designed to elicit sympathy.
A wave of frustration washed over me. “This is all my fault. I shouldn’t have joked around like that. Let’s just forget it, okay? Wayne, don’t worry about it. I didn’t mean anything by it…” I attempted to diffuse the tension, but my words felt hollow, swallowed by the atmosphere thick with judgment.
She played the victim so flawlessly that suddenly, the eyes of everyone in the vicinity turned toward me, their gazes heavy with accusation as if I were the villain in this twisted narrative.
Wayne’s expression darkened, clouds of anger swirling in his eyes. He seized Olivia’s wrist before she could escape and shot me a look that was as cold as ice.
“Nora, what the hell is your problem? We’re all just joking around. Why do you have to kill the mood and make everyone uncomfortable?” His voice was raised, a sharp edge slicing through the laughter that had once filled the air.
“Are you happy now? Everyone’s miserable because of you,” I shot back, my voice trembling with a mix of anger and hurt.
