Any ideas why lip gloss these days seems to dry out your lips?

I know about winter changing your skin and that we can get so used to things like Vaseline or whatever, making lips feel dried up when we don't use it, but it seems there's a lot of formulas now that actually feel like they make things worse. Its either cheap full on sticky sugar stuff which tastes and feels awful (but does last) or expensive thin oily stuff which smells and feels delicious for half a second, then does the opposite of helping.
