Avatar 1 and 2 are tied for most weeks at #1 in the 21st century. Can this ever be beaten by a non-Avatar film?
Avatar 1 and 2 are tied for the longest hold as #1 at the domestic box office in the 21st century with both holding it for 7 weekends straight respectively. Avatar 3 has a chance of performing the same.
The most weeks a movie has held it in total is Titanic at 15, but that’s basically an impossible record to beat in the 21st century since movies are usually more frontloaded now and there are more being made.
But can a non Avatar movie ever beat the 7 week record? These movies have insane legs, so it’s obviously hard.
Looking at the 2026 slate, it seems unlikely due to all the competition. Super Mario Galaxy will probably lose the #1 spot to Michael on its fourth weekend, and Spider-Man 4 will probably lose to the next Insidious movie on its fourth weekend.
Avengers: Doomsday is a similar place to the Avatar movies with being a huge event movie in the same December release, but even in the best case scenario for that movie, it would probably only tie with the Avatar movies with 7 weeks as #1 since Ice Age 6 comes out on its eighth weekend, unless Disney delays it just one week specifically to claim the record.
Not sure about Secret Wars since we don’t know what’s coming in early 2028.
What do you think? Can anything that isn’t Avatar ever have 8 weeks or more as #1, or is this impossible in the 21st century?
