My grandmother accepts me 🥲🥹
Just want to say upfront, I know I am incredibly lucky for what I am about to say and my heart goes out to anyone who doesn't have the same experiences.
The first people I came out to was back in January about a week after my egg cracked, but it wasn't until around springtime that I started really taking steps and coming out fully. I've been incredibly lucky, and have been accepted at every stage (I like to think it's a testament to the way I have lived my life that there are no bigots in my orbit).
But there was one person I wasn't sure about. My grandmother is 95. I had no idea what her thoughts on trans people would be (although I did at least know she was fully accepting of my brother and cousin who are both gay). I left it up to my dad and aunt to tell me if I should come out to her or – morbid as this thought is – if I should hide my identity from her for what will probably be a countable number of times that I will ever see her again (I live in a different country to my family and generally only visit her twice a year at most).
My dad went back and forth on it. He really didn't know if she had the experience to understand it. But in the end he said it should be my choice. I decided that I wanted her to know. But I was extremely anxious, not least because I started to convince myself that at some point I was sure to have a bad experience coming out. Surely nobody gets a 100% smooth ride, right?
I already knew how I would do it. She hates talking on the phone, and her hearing is getting pretty bad so even in person a deep conversation is tough to do. But she absolutely loves receiving and writing letters. So I wrote her one, sent it to my dad, and he delivered it so that he could be there to talk to her if she didn't understand.
It turns out she didn't really need my dad. In his words, she understood the concept, didn't question any of the terminology I used, and was just "happy that I found my good place".
Anyway, I'm not sure what the point of this post is tbh. Just wanted to share and say I love my family 💖
