Anyone else’s ED a result of severe OCD/BDD?

Discussion

I have a diagnosis for both and have suffered my whole life since I was extremely young. My OCD is quite severe and extremely debilitating and I cannot remember ever living without constant OCD thoughts/rumination. I exhibited symptoms as early as 4-5 years old. I currently have upwards of 20+ compulsions that I need to perform daily. My compulsions have changed and manifested in different ways over time depending on what my biggest triggers are during each “episode”, but a lot of them have always coincided with my body dysmorphia in some way. My “episodes” (being hyper-fixated on an aspect of my life or appearance) can last several months or even years.

I do suffer from other types of OCD aside from BDD (purely obsessional OCD, relationship OCD, checking OCD, harm OCD, magical thinking OCD) but my body dysmorphia has always been by far the worst. Things I’ve obsessed over throughout the years relating to my appearance include my hair, my skin, my clothing, my teeth, and extremely hyper-specific parts of my body. I’m also a trans man so the dysphoria I experience is compounded by both my OCD and my body dysmorphia. They all feed into each other.

I have never been an overweight BMI or even really an average weight. I’ve always been underweight to some degree, but I’ve become obsessed with my weight and my body and restriction nonetheless. The first time I dealt with anorexia lasted for a bit under two years, and my current relapse has lasted about 8 months. I legitimately am incapable of viewing my body objectively. I’ve never been able to “see what other people see” so to speak. It really is like looking in a funhouse mirror every time I see myself and how I process my appearance can change in a matter of minutes and is largely dependent on external triggers and the circumstances of my life at that time.

The ritualistic parts of restriction and the obsession with numbers is also appealing to me, I think. It feels “safe” and comfortable to engage in these behaviors over and over even though it is detrimental to every aspect of my life, as are a lot of my other compulsions.

I’m about to begin medication for my OCD for the first time in my life next month and I’m really holding out for it to work because every obsession I’ve had over my appearance has legitimately caused me to spiral so hard and fast that I end up not being able to function, keep a steady job, handle personal responsibilities, etc. I just keep digging myself into a deeper and deeper hole and before I know it I’m having panic attacks every day and completely socially isolating because I do not want to be perceived by other people. It gets insane and I feel like most people don’t really understand.
