MTS, Crawl Control, etc, useful or all just crutches?

I mean, sure, they're all handy. But an old school 4Runner or Land Cruiser didn't have them and no one complains about their off road capability in any way. A triple locked Land Cruiser can go anywhere. So, useful, or just another thing that can break on the trail?
