The Creation Story of Zyhr: The First Trauma

Lore

The First Trauma is the creation story in my worldbuilding project. Although, the actual happenings at the dawn of existence itself is a mystery to all. The First Trauma was the catalyst which sparked creation and brought structure and order into the wild and chaotic Flows which existed in a mythical age before time had even taken shape. This was an age of pure potential. The Flows being the underlying current of magical energy which gives rise to the forces of nature, matter and life itself.

For a bit more insight into how magic and physics function in the world of Zyhr, the First Trauma can be thought of as Zyhr’s version of the Big Bang, though not exactly the same. It wasn’t a moment of sudden creation, but rather the violent rejection of something incompatible with existence. It marked the end of the raw, directionless Flows and the beginning of structure, of time, of form. A time before time, whose duration is impossible to measure. In my mind, it came just after the initial burst, when magic surged into the ur-void, colliding with nothingness, and began shaping the framework of reality itself. But at the same time it came just before the advent of creation itself.

If you are interested, you can find a post about how magic and physics in the world of Zyhr work here.

The Wound at the Dawn of Time

Before existence had shape, before the first mountains stood or the oceans breathed, the universe was only a canvas of raw magical energy: the ever-shifting, formless Flows of magic. In this silence, the Primordials emerged: vast, instinctive forces shaped from the universe’s will for creation, coalescing as dense concentrations of elemental currents. They did not rule; they simply were; living embodiments of the forces of nature which would become the spark for creation itself. Each Primordial embodied a fundamental physical principle, not as mythic symbols, but as raw forces made manifest. Fire represented the presence of energy in its most volatile form, while its counterpart, Ice, embodied the absence or suppression of that energy. Wind, Water, Earth, and Lightning reflected the core states of matter or essential forces: gases, liquids, solids, plasma, motion, and gravity. And perhaps there were others, long forgotten or destroyed in the First Trauma, their principles buried deep within the Flows, never to be known again.

But all of them were mere shadows compared to the Seventh: the Primordial of Black and White Magic. Its presence was unlike any elemental power. It did not bind itself to heat, or stone, or water, or any physical principle. Instead, it embodied contradiction itself: unity and division, creation and destruction, order and chaos. It was the silent architecture beneath existence, the force defining what could be. Where the others shaped matter, the Seventh shaped possibility. Where the others breathed through the Flows, the Flows bent around the Seventh.

At first, the other Primordials gravitated toward the Seventh, not out of worship or fear, but because its presence imposed structure on their instincts. They were the forces of nature; it was the force that defined what nature could become. For an unknown span, perhaps only moments, perhaps eons, the Primordials existed under this subtle gravity. The world began to settle; forms stabilized, the Flows thickened, and reality itself grew consistent under the Seventh’s influence.

And then, the world understood what it was harboring… and it recoiled. Not with thought or intent, but with a primal, reflexive revulsion, the way a body rejects a poison. Existence itself recognized that the Seventh was a paradox incompatible with the reality’s continued existence. That reflex, that act of reality trying to expel the impossible within it, became the First Trauma.

What Happened During the First Trauma

The First Trauma happened at the advent of time. There was no soul around to witness this cosmic convulsion, and neither records nor myths remain. Yet if one could peel back the layers of time, they might witness something like the following:

1. Reality Buckled:

The Flows of magic collapsed inward as if drawn by an immense gravity at the world’s core, then snapped outward in a violent surge. All seven Primordials were caught in this convulsio, their very essences stretched, twisted, and torn apart as the world desperately attempted to expel the paradox at its heart.

2. The Elemental Primordials Perished:

The six elemental Primordials (of Earth, Wind, Water, Lightning, Fire and Ice) began to die in this upheaval. Their immortal weaves were unraveled, dismantled, shattered, and torn apart, then absorbed back into the rampaging Flows. These deaths were not intentional attacks, but catastrophic accidents as reality rejected the Seventh. The only Primordial who survived was Thale, the Primordial of Wind, all others were unmade by the trauma.

3. The Seventh Primordial Fragmented:

The world could not outright destroy the Primordial of Black and White Magic, for the Seventh’s existence was interwoven with reality itself. Destroying it completely would have been akin to reality annihilating itself. Instead, the Seventh shattered into countless pieces. Its core essence fragmented into innumerable shards of soul, memory, will, and intention. These pieces were flung far and wide, scattering throughout the world and sinking into the Flows. Some fragments embedded in matter, some drifted among magical currents, and some dissolved into formless potential. The Seventh did not die, instead it became a million silent seeds buried within existence, housing the potential for new forms of life to emerge.

4. Only Thale Survived (Scarred):

Thale, the Primordial of Wind, survived the First Trauma. Although, not through superior strength, but by sheer luck or peculiarity of his nature. Even so, what remained of Thale was not whole. He emerged from the cataclysm scarred and diminished. Thale carries the memory of that event not as a clear story, but as a wound etched into his very essence, a terror and dissonance that he cannot fully articulate. He alone remembers the fear: every storm he conjures and every desolate wind he breathes carries an echo of the First Trauma and a lingering awareness of the Seventh’s power.

The True Nature of the Seventh

What was the Seventh truly, for existence itself to have such a strong reaction to its sheer existence? To understand this, you first have to understand the nature of the other Primordials.

The Primordials are not living beings like humans or animals. At the same time they also aren’t magical beings like spirit-kind which exists across Zyhr. They also aren’t divine, devilish or eldritch in nature. They are something far more primal; they are embodiments of the very concepts which shape reality and in turn physics (e.g. the Primordial of Fire embodying heat, the transfer of energy and plasma as a state of matter). However, they were fundamentally different from the others. The Seventh did not embody a concept clearly defined through physics, instead the Seventh embodied the metaphysical structure of the universe: distinction and unity, selfhood and dissolution, memory and oblivion, will and surrender, the patterns behind reality. In other words: the Seventh embodied the ability of understanding the world.

So why did the Seventh get rejected by existence? When the Seventh was born, the world was pure chaos brought about by an unexplainable surge of magic within the ur-void, which would in time become the Flows. During this chaotic primordial soup of magic, the world was not yet ready to house akin to structure. What the Seventh brought into reality were the distinction between "inside" and "outside", as well as the potential for consciousness, permanence and souls. These things were alien to a world that operated only through physical law. The moment the Seventh came into existence, the world experienced something it had never encountered: the possibility of awareness and it recoiled, because its fundamental fabric had no capacity to contain that kind of being.

Consequences of the First Trauma

The universe was irrevocably changed in the wake of the First Trauma. While the Seventh was destroyed beyond repair (or so the world would have hoped), its influence lingered.

1. The Flows Were Stabilized (Birth of Modern Magic):

The violent collapse-and-expansion of the Flows, coupled with the reintegration of the Primordials’ dispersed essence and the structure brought about by the Seventh’s advent, forced the chaotic energies into new, stable patterns. What had once been raw, directionless magic coalesced into the structured currents that Spellweavers and Spirits tap into today. In other words, magic as it is known in modern Zyhr became possible only because the Seventh and the other Primordials were broken. The Flows transformed from wild and unpredictable to (mostly) stable and reliable streams of power, giving rise to the modern schools of magic.

2. The Spark of Creation and Life:

With the Primordials shattered and merged into the fabric of reality, creation itself was jump-started. The forces released were etched eternally into the Flows and into existence. Reality, now driven toward new creation, began to pull those scattered essences together in myriad ways, weaving new patterns out of the infinite strands of magic. Slowly, stars ignited, planets formed, galaxies spun outwards; the universe took shape as we know it. Most importantly, the fragmented essence of the Seventh Primordial infused the newly stabilized world with the potential for life. Those tiny shards of the Seventh became the seeds of consciousness. Without these fragments, nothing in Zyhr would have developed a true, self-aware soul or conscious identity. Life in Zyhr is, in a very real sense, the direct residue of the Seventh’s shattering.

3. The Emergence of Spirits:

After the Trauma, the world’s magical environment had the stability necessary for distinct spiritual beings to form. Before, only the Primordials and Proto-Spirits existed as conscious forces. Proto-Spirits were fleeting, unstable anomalies in the Flows, forming and fading out of existence in the blink of an eye. Now in the post-Trauma world, the Flows had stabalized to a point at which these Proto-Spirits could coalesce into enduring entities. They gained the capacity to grow, evolve, and maintain their own identities. Over time, these nascent spirits gave rise to the Great Spirits known in today’s world (such as Vishni, Thun, Solhar, Raigon, and Avi). Importantly, these Great Spirits are not descendants of the original Primordials; they are entirely new beings born in a world stabilized by the Trauma. Through their will to live and the rich magic now available, they grew into powerful forces of nature in their own right.

The First Trauma in Modern Understanding

The First Trauma is a mystery to the modern world. Aside Thale there are no survivors to bear witness, and there are no records of this event at the advent of time. To mortals and modern civilization, the event lies beyond mythic history, completely forgotten and unknowable. Yet, some Whisperers (those with the rare gift of being able to speak and understand the Language of the World) occasionally hear its echoes: faint dissonant murmurs of a world breaking and remaking itself.

Although, there is one enigmatic figure, which feels and instinctive pull towards this primordial scar left on reality itself. As he roams the world, collecting the scattered fragments of the Seventh, the danger of this presence stirring again, becomes ever more present. What memories he gleans from those fragments, only he knows, and even he does not yet understand the full truth of what he will find at the beginning of time.

No one truly knows what this silent wanderer’s goal is, or why he is so keen on gathering the Seventh’s fragments. But the world remembers its first wound, and fears what might happen, if the Seventh reawakens. As the Seventh presence grows ever stronger the winds across Zyhr have begun to shift as an ancient fear stirs within Thale.
