Thinking of moving from Vancouver to Montreal — should I do it? Need some advice 🙏
Hey everyone,
I’m a 29M, not Canadian-born, and moved to Vancouver about 3 years ago. I love nature and hiking here, but lately I’ve been feeling like something major is missing in my life:
1. The arts + culture vibes.
I’m an art fan and an amateur painter, and Vancouver just feels… quiet? I really crave more galleries, events, creative communities, etc.
2. Social life.
People here are friendly, but very isolated. Most acquaintances are already married with families, and I’ve found it pretty hard to make new friends. I’m wondering if Montreal has more of a younger, social, artistic energy?
I was recently laid off due to market volatility, and I’m interviewing again now. This has me rethinking whether I should stay in Vancouver or try something new. A few things about my situation:
[Language]
English isn’t my first language (nor French), but I'm fluent in English and around A2 in French. I’m willing to improve, but I know Montreal’s job market can be tough without strong French.
I can’t move without a job, it’s too risky. Unless… I found a strong art program. Does Montreal have good oil painting courses or an MFA program? (I know McGill/UdeM don’t really offer studio art MFAs, plz advise)
[Career]
I hold a Master’s in Communication & Marketing and have 6+ years of marketing experience. It feels easier to get marketing roles in Vancouver compared to Montreal from what I’ve seen.
[Winter]
I am kinda terrified of Montreal winters. Months of cold + limited sunshine… not sure if I’d survive mentally
So, given all this, should I stay in Vancouver or seriously consider Montreal?
I want more culture, more art, more community, but I’m also worried about jobs, language, and winter.
Any advice, personal experiences, or honest takes would be super appreciated.
Thank you / Merci! 🙏
