Why I Created r/BlackAutisticPro (Read This First)

This community was created by a Black autistic woman working in healthcare who wanted a place where our lived experiences are understood, respected, and affirmed.

I was late-diagnosed, I’ve worked across multiple nursing specialties, and I know firsthand what it feels like to navigate professional spaces while masking, overthinking, code-switching, and trying to manage a sensory system that doesn’t always match what the job demands.

I built this subreddit because: • I couldn’t find a space that centered Black autistic professionals • I saw how isolating the diagnostic and self-diagnostic journey can be • I know how rare it is to see Black autistic voices uplifted, supported, or believed • I wanted a community where LGBTQ+ autistic folks are fully welcome and affirmed • And because so many of us deserve a place where we don’t have to shrink, explain, or justify who we are

This space is for us — our identities, our careers, our sensory needs, our wins, our burnout, our culture, our healing, our stories.

I’ll be here posting resources, guiding discussions, sharing videos from my other platforms, uplifting other Black autistic creators, and helping keep this space safe and supportive. But this community belongs to all of us.

You’re safe here. You’re seen here. You belong here.
