Do you ever wonder if the only cure is living in a fundamentally different society?
I never really had great mental health, as I grew up undiagnosed autistic in foster care after a situation with blood family, but I wonder more and more every day if the real problem is the way modern humans live. Because I put in a lot of hard work to try to be as functional as possible... I've been in therapy for 14yrs, medicated, married to a partner of a decade, and within the last year I landed a major promotion in which I now manage a business. But at my core, I'm fundamentally unhappy. Those feelings get drowned out when I'm at work, or spending time with my partner, but I constantly have a looming feeling over my head which grows to unbearable weight whenever I'm not distracted. I feel deeply worried for the state of the world and our future generations. Once I found out we hit the point of no return for global warming, I essentially spiraled. It's devastating to watch our society become hyper individualized, driven by overconsumption/ecocide/disdain for the vulnerable. Finding real, healthy relationships with emotionally mature people is becoming fewer and farther between as we turn to artificial technology to fill those voids. Even showing up to work every day, I feel hollow because I know I'm not putting my energy back into my community in the ways we were meant to: holistically, and with the collective in mind. I've been trying so hard to keep going every day, to utilize the coping mechanisms I already know, but I'm reaching previously unexperienced levels of anxiety, loneliness, and general hypoarousal. When I try to think of what would make me feel better, the answer is always living in a fairer, honest, compassionate society. And I don't know how to move forward with the limitations outside of my control without unraveling at the seams
