Change my working hours for more pay
Ok this might be long so bear with me but an opportunity may arise at my job and I want to know if this new schedule would be something that will be worth it.
Right now I work as a nurse with one of the best schedules ever. T,W,Th 6-230 with call which is usually 4 in an 8 week period on weekends. My mom watches my two kids ages 2 and 3.5 on the days I work and I pay her a very minuscule amount. She says she loves it but I’ve noticed lately she’s been pretty snappy with my kids and she’s had to start getting acupuncture because of holding my clingy 2 year old. It has started to cause me to look for other schedules that will make her enjoy being a grandma more instead of a babysitter so often.
Well at my hospital the recovery room nurses have a ton of call. Some days they have call on the night before they’re scheduled to work and it’s caused a lot of them to quit (myself included, I used to work in the recovery room). On Tuesday a few of the nurses are coming together with the managers to try and get a nurse to be the “on call” nurse.
If they are interested, I am tempted to come up with an offer for them. I could be on call Sunday 7p-7a M-Th 10p-7a Every week. And if I’m called in every night for many hours or if I get called in once I’ll get guaranteed pay of 40 hours a week which is more than I make now and would significantly increase my salary. Like 40k/year. Right now we are debt free but our bank account has remained the same for a long time. We are taking about another baby but can’t do it financially right now and I would never have another baby and expect my mom to watch three so this opportunity could make both of those circumstances align and we could have a third!
If you were me would you do it? I am nervous about if I get called in too much and won’t be a fully functioning mother/nurse when I need to be. Technically I could still have my mom be available if she wanted to to let me sleep if it was a really long night.
Here is my pros and cons list:
Pros: More money More time with the kids will not have to take call on Fridays and Saturdays Less days my mom needs to work
Cons: Switching jobs again Always being the main nurse Overnight Would possibly have to do call on holidays, I’d have to talk about this Need to use more PTO (right now I never have to use any I just go on my 4 day weekend I have every weekend)
Is there anything I am missing that is a big deal or is this a no brainer? If I leave my position and hate this one my position will probably not be available for me to fall back on.
Any people out there who can write a contract or advice for me so I don’t screw myself over?
I’d really like some input from everyone as it’s not something I really want to talk to friends or coworkers about! TIA!
