Week 1 marketing for my macOS app: 31 users, 7 directories, and everything I'm doing to grow traffic
Building an AI-powered password manager for macOS. Sharing the marketing side of the journey.
The product: The Password App - uses AI browser automation to actually change your passwords, not just store them. Been building for ~6 months, launched publicly last week.
Current metrics (last 7 days from Google Analytics):
- 31 active users
- 37 pricing page views (+500% week over week)
- Traffic sources: 26 Direct, 7 Organic Social, 1 Referral
- Countries: US (15), Germany (5), UK, France, Spain, Denmark, Bangladesh
Marketing infrastructure I've set up:
- Google Search Console - Submitted sitemap, monitoring for indexing. Still waiting for most pages to get indexed.
- Google Analytics 4 - Custom events for key actions (download_page_view, pricing_page_view, free_signup_page_view). Helps me see where users drop off.
Directory submissions (7 completed):
- AlternativeTo
- SaasHub
- Capterra
- Slant.co
- SourceForge
- TheresAnAIForThat.com
- SoloLaunches.com
Content marketing - Published 6 blog posts on security topics. Trying to rank for long-tail keywords around credential theft, password security, AI agents.
Social presence - u/thepasswordapp on X. Posted ~9 tweets today alone. Mix of product updates, builder journey content, and security news commentary.
What's working:
- Direct traffic is highest, suggesting word-of-mouth/sharing
- Organic social growing (7 sessions this week)
- Blog posts getting indexed slowly
What I'm still figuring out
- SEO takes time - most pages not indexed yet
- Converting visitors to downloads
Next steps:
- More directory submissions (G2, GetApp)
- Guest posts on security blogs
- Maybe a Product Hunt launch when I have more traction
If you're building something similar, would love to hear what marketing channels worked for you.
