Home insurance after buying — how do you know what to enter is actually right?
Hey all,
We’ve just bought a property with settlement in early January, and I’m starting the process of organizing home insurance. I’ve been trying out different insurers’ quote forms, but I’m getting stuck.
Some sites pre-fill a lot of the details automatically, while others ask for much more specific information about materials, construction, roof type, etc. It’s hard to know whether the information I’m entering is actually accurate, and whether the cover I’m selecting is appropriate for the property.
For anyone who’s been through this recently:
- How did you figure out what to enter for things like construction details and rebuild cost?
- Did you just trust the insurer calculators, or did you seek out independent advice?
- Are insurance brokers worth considering for this, or unnecessary for a normal residential purchase?
- Any tips for making sure the policy actually covers what it needs to?
Appreciate any insight from people who’ve navigated this before.
