Minimum backswing for soft shorts?

Question

I have been drilling soft shots such as drops, dinks, and resets, and this suddenly clicks with me that for most soft shots you want to have almost zero backswing and you want the ball coming to your paddle which means a very short distance between where the paddle starts to move and where the paddle meets the ball. I think this minimizes the variation of the stroke thus makes your stroke more consistent. I have heard a few pros teaching this but it just clicked with me today. I was wondering if this makes sense to you?
