Why is America super Protestant?

I’m a Hungarian cradle Catholic, and in Europe, there has always been substantial Catholic influence (Spain, Hungary, Lithuania, Poland, Bavaria, France, and so on). So it seems strange to me to hear people’s testimonies - either Catholic Americans or Catholics visiting America - and finding out how Protestant they are. I can’t exactly wrap my head around it since yes, the Anglicans technically founded America, but France, Spain, and Mexico all owned lots of territory too. Is there something I missed?
