Google My Business Owner Lightly Threatening Me to Remove My Review or he will "expose my past behavior."

Question

A few years ago I was a short-term customer at a local business with a pretty tight-knit community atmosphere. I had several negative safety-related experiences in a short time, so I stopped going and moved on.

Recently I left a calm, factual 1-star Google review describing what happened — nothing emotional, no attacks, just my perspective.

Within a very short time, the owner emailed me multiple times:

  • First asking politely if I’d remove the review
  • Then guilt-tripping me (“you used to say you really liked it here,” etc.)
  • And finally implying consequences if I didn’t comply

He also said he’d “rather the review be removed than have to respond publicly.”

There was no threat of physical harm or anything, but the tone felt like pressure, intimidation, or retaliation for honest feedback.

What would you do in this situation? And does this violate Google’s rules for business-owner conduct in review disputes?
