# **Move over, Murdoch: will Lord Rothermere be Britain’s most powerful media mogul?**

**Published:** November 29, 2025 — The Guardian Staff

## What’s going on

- Lord Rothermere — who chairs Daily Mail & General Trust (DMGT), the company behind the Daily Mail, Mail on Sunday, Metro, and other titles — has renewed his bid to acquire the Telegraph Media Group (the broadsheet titles The Daily Telegraph and its sibling papers), nearly 20 years after a failed 2004 attempt. - If successful, the takeover would combine two major right-leaning newspaper houses — giving Rothermere control over a media empire that spans mid-market tabloid reach (Mail, Metro) and influential broadsheet journalism (Telegraph). - The 2025 deal reportedly carries a price tag of around **£500 million**, though the acquisition still faces hurdles: concerns over media concentration, regulatory scrutiny, and questions about the financial and political cost. ## Why it matters

- **Media power consolidation:** A merged Mail–Telegraph media group could control a huge portion of national newspaper readership in the UK — reshaping how news and political coverage is framed, especially for conservative and centre-right audiences.
- **Political influence:** With both tabloid-style reach and broadsheet gravitas under one roof, the group would have unprecedented leverage on public opinion, policy debate, and the shaping of national discourse.
- **Declining plurality & watchdog concerns:** Critics warn that the takeover threatens editorial independence, reduces plurality in the press, and could lead to narrower perspectives dominating national news — at a time when many local outlets are already dying.
- **Digital stakes:** Beyond print, Rothermere appears motivated by the potential for subscription-driven digital growth — betting that a combined news offer can outlast shrinking print revenues. ## The stakes & the fallout

Some former editors and media-watch voices say the consolidation risks turning UK outlets into a monolithic echo chamber of right-leaning ideology.
Others argue that the financial crisis facing news media demands mergers to preserve viability — but warn that the result may be what amounts to a “media cartel,” where a handful of proprietors wield disproportionate influence.

Whether regulators approve the deal — and whether editorial independence survives under the new ownership — could shape the fate of British journalism for decades.
