The Fantastic Mrs Fuck's guide to learning Magik (half serious)

Discussion

so. you've picked up Magik cause of her awesome skins and you wanna get better, but it feels like hitting your head against the wall, so you came here for help? great choice. over the next couple paragraphs i'll impart onto you the knowledge i've accumulated over the past 200 hours of basically only playing Magik. please keep in mind that as of writing this i haven't slept for 30 hours. if you disagree let me know in the comments but please be nice. i'll put a tl;dr down there for you guys too

First, don't be cheap. but don't spend money. go do a bunch of the heroic journey quests to get units to buy a magik skin (you can do this on an alt and gift the skin to yourself afaik). obviously you don't need to do this but like. come on you either already have a skin or want one BADLY.

Second, the kit. Go into the practice range. Press L1 (or your equivalent but if you're playing Magik you're probably a controller user) to use a portal. then you can use R2 to do a swirl or L2 to use a demon. The portal itself gives you iframes, which is huge. You can time this through Scarlet Witch, Jeff, pretty much any single damage burst ults to punish them. it also gives you a very slight height increase that you can use to make jumps that you just about can't reach otherwise, but that's not very useful most of the time. You only want to use this for lateral, not vertical movement.

You also have a dash, on R1. This is where your damage is and usually where your combos start. A very good use for this is to use during a swirl (so L1 to portal, R2 to swirl and few frames after pressing that, press R1 to dash, if you look like a beyblade you've done it right.) This adds the swirl damage onto the dash so you basically become a massive moving hitbox. The dash goes both a lot further and a lot less far than you think depending on which is less useful at the given time, so measure out your dashes. The hitbox for the dash is Magik herself, so if you aim too left of the enemy you'll be way off, but if you aim a little too right you're probably fine. Hitting these is the most important part of playing Magik good.

The swirl can also be used for a little bit of damage over a wide space to finish off a quick oppenent a little bit outside of soulsword range but its best saved for use with your dash.

The slash beam does a decent amount of damage over a pretty big range and i don't think has drop off damage. It pierces now, and each enemy pierced takes a little time off your portal cooldown, which helps in running away when you overextend (you will be overextending when transitioning from dive to brawl). You can also animation cancel using this to deal damage quicker.

Speaking of animation cancels, the soulsword itself. It does more dmg the closer you are, but always has pretty decent damage and range. You should be using your melee (not sharp end) between every slash as soon as the damage comes out if the enemy is in range of the melee. so like soulsword-melee-sword-melee-sword melee. and like I said, the slash beam animation cancels, you if you wanna go fast you go sword-melee-slash beam-sword-melee, or for my controller girlies (i love you people more) thats R2-R3-L2-R2-R3 (i think r3 is clicking down the right bumper)

The demon is best used in brawling, against tanks and such. It does a shit ton of damage and only lasts a little bit, but is generally better than your whirl in my experience, and when you're moving it gives you access to your sword beam quicker than waiting for the swirl animation if you need to put out damage fast. You can also leave it and run away to deal dmg over time, and i don't believe it can be killed so the enemy just kind of has to move or take it.

Hitting enemies with any sort of damage generates bonus health, this is bc of her passive. so, in a pinch, dump as much damage as possible onto the nearest enemy and save a portal to piss off QUICKLY. The demon will help generate this fast if you put him in a crowd or on a tank. this is why she is so survivable.

ok cool so you're an expert in normal magik. now for darkchylde

you should be very excited when you get darkchylde. i want to see smiles on faces. why is it called darkchylde when the game says darkchild? i don't know. i didn't read the comics. but people get mad at me otherwise so it's like that

anyway so pop darkchild out of view of the enemy, because you do NOT get Invinciblity during ult transition (both in and out) and are a HUGE target. pop it behind a wall and jump out like Freddy Fazbear if he was a guest appearance in Stranger Things.

You will notice several things. first you have 3 portals. this is because your objective with portals has been changed. during your transition, i want you to alt tab to a youtube video of beyblades in motion. study them closely. now, as you tab back into rivals, channel that energy. SWIRL. KEEP SWIRLING. HOLY SHIT YOUR SWIRL DOES SO MUCH DAMAGE.

your dash is great too because you don't launch yourself now, only the enemy, so you can start dealing damage faster after the dash. when doing the beyblade dash i taught you earlier (dash in the middle of swirl) you need to wait a little longer before dashing, cause magik has a bigger sword to swirl so it takes a little longer to come out. damage now happens in chunks of three for your sword attacks. the demon can occasionally be useful but you're honestly best off using simple slashes (no animation cancel this time, cause theres no melee in darkchylde) and your swirl. this ult, when used properly (its never a bad time really) can change the tide of the game. I've done 1v6s with this shit.

but its best use imo is for shutting down support ults. being as intimidating as magik is, supports will ult out of fear to try and stop you. now steel yourself. you will have to kill your girlfriend. if you were wondering all the supports are Magik's girlfriends. all of them. to kill a support ult you will do the following:

  • make sure you are not currently dying. this one's hard
  • charge your slash beam fully. it takes longer in darkchylde. its okay. get your support to hold your hand while you charge it.
  • let 'er rip at full charge and then dash after the projectile leaves so both the projectile and dash hit the support ult simultaneously
  • you did it. your girlfriend is entirely atomised and there aren't even remains to bury. you're so cool for that. emma is so gonna let you wear the strap tonight (all the tanks are her girlfriends too)

darkchylde also refreshes your abilities, so if you need to get onto site quickly and ult is active you will have a total of 7 movement abilities, which should be more than enough. (2x dashes, 5x portals). also when using portals to go quicker out of combat place your demon instead of swirling so you can go into another portal faster. then at the site of combat throw a sword beam into the crowd to recharge your portals a little bit.

ok. great. now you're an expert in both Darkchylde and normal magik! very proud of you dear. we're nearly done well done for keeping up so far.

Playstyle is very vibes based. Magik is GREAT at both diving and brawling. For those confused at the distinction, diving is when you beyblade charge at your small girlfriends and brawling is when you throw demons at your large girlfriends. Obviously, diving includes fighting DPS as well. a shame, considering that the DPS are all your girlfriends. alas,

Fighting tanks: While Magik can win a 1v1 against any character (yes, including Bucky, Thor and The Thing. you can do this), tanks are usually the most difficult. work with your team, get heals. Use your portals to have a demon on them at all times, and harass them with your sword-melee-slash beam comboes. sometimes, if they're getting heals or your team are a little lackluster, fighting tanks just isn't gonna work out. that's okay. in that case, try:

Fighting DPS: Combos. DPS are usually a bit harder cause they have more get-the-fuck-off-me buttons, and less i'm-getting-out-of-here buttons. I'll now teach you, the magic magik combo. You'll approach your medium size girlfriend (DON'T COMMENT ON HER WEIGHT) and do this:

Portal towards her - swirl - dash during swirl - [does it connect?]: [If yes and you get liftoff]: Sword - melee - slash - sword - melee and repeat as needed. if it starts dragging on a bit toss out a demon
[If no] portal away and keep the dps in your sight. you are now a brawler until you get your dash again.

^(and for my dear controller users: hows it going? still love you all very much)

^( L1 - R2 + R1 (delayed) - R2 - R3 - L2 - R2 - R3 etc etc)

If it's a Magik that you're fighting, it's a different routine. the trick is to NOT DASH FIRST. first to dash just gets dodged using a portal and punished with a dash that they can't dodge as easily and can't see coming. from there the outcome is decided by God and God alone. my advice? make friends and leave them be but ping them for someone else to sort out. anyway all thats left is

Fighting Support: slipperly little fuckers. the lot of them. Refer back to the prior flowchart but if you don't get liftoff just go back to your frontline.

anyway now the most important part

MUSIC!!

if you aren't listening to music you're doing it wrong. any music you find suitably hype enough works but i do have a playlist to refer to if you need.

artists you should include are those such as (but are certainly not limited to) Paramore, The Dresden Dolls, Black Stone Cherry*, My Chemical Romance, Guns 'n' Roses, Shinedown, anything from the Guilty Gear and Devil May Cry soundtracks. If you have an emo sister or know any trans women, ask for her playlist, this will do nicely.

you obviously don't actually have to but i can't recommend it enough it enhances the experience so much.

*you'll notice the entire debut album of Black Stone Cherry is on my playlist. this is because it's fucking amazing

what else. have fun. as soon as you're not having fun swap off magik and play tank because if you're not having fun you might as well play the role that's designed with that in mind. very vibes based character just do what feels best ig. now go forth my children and fight for limbo. don't bother with nightmare IV that fucking title isn't worth it

the playlist in question: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/40wZiGv20xMd9qnSBTf6re?si=EnypWMkbQfurc98P1VbGGg&pi=dh_gfnrVQWqfW

if you have any questions please ask me i might even answer
