queer fiction that isn’t fantasy, sci-fi, or traditional romance

ISO

bonus points for non-binary and/or polyamorous characters.

i’m looking for fiction mostly based in reality (though i’m a sucker for surrealism as a plot device) that features queer characters but doesn’t center around a romantic storyline. definitely not looking for fantasy or hard sci-fi, but open to soft sci-fi (akin to the tone of station eleven).

i just finished the cheese monkeys and the learners, both by chip kidd (a queer graphic designer turned author) and i’m looking to scratch a similar itch by finding other books that are queer af, but not obviously so. i’m at a point in my life where i relate more to a queer identity than i do to overt sexuality or romance, though i’m happy to discover books that do touch on either, as long as they aren’t the sole focus.
