The day I learned adulting is basically just paperwork and hoping you don’t screw up

Venting

Last week I tried to set up internet at my new place and honestly the entire process made me question how any adult functions normally.

I go in with my lease, my ID, everything. The rep asks if I’ve ever had an account with them before. I say no. Then he asks for my Social, which already made me nervous. Then he says they have to run a credit check.

For internet. Just internet.

I told him my credit is still in the “recovering from early-20s stupidity” phase but everything’s been on time for years now. He just nodded and typed something for like five minutes like he was writing a thesis.

Then he goes, “It didn’t auto-approve. You’ll need a deposit.”

And I’m like… yeah okay whatever, how much?

$200.

Just to get wi-fi.

I paid it because I didn’t have a choice, but the whole thing just felt ridiculous. I’ve worked so hard to clean up my finances and one stupid soft check sets me back again.

Idk if this is normal or I got scammed.
