Petting soi dogs safe?

I have a weakened immune system. There are many stray dogs on the island and I wonder if it safe to pet and feed them. Or would it be better to leave them alone? My travel companion does feed and pet them and thinks its over the top that I keep my distance and stand 100 m away when he pets and feeds them. They otherwise also come running up to me. Am I being too cautious?
