Need advice planning a South Asian wedding while navigating a parent’s cancer diagnosis + financial pressure

Tough Times

Hi everyone, I’m really hoping for some guidance. My fiancé (M, only son) and I (F) got engaged in February and were excited to start planning our South Asian wedding. But in August, his mom was diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer and has become mostly bedridden. Since then, everything has felt completely frozen. We still don’t have a date, venue, or even a sense of how to move forward.

On top of the emotional stress, there’s the financial layer. His parents are not well off, and as the only son, there’s an unspoken expectation that he will be the main support system—emotionally and financially. I want to be supportive, but the uncertainty around his mom’s health and the responsibility he’ll have for his parents makes planning a big wedding feel overwhelming. I’m worried about whether we should wait, scale down, or just pick a date and move forward.

I love him and want to build a future together, but I’m feeling lost about how to balance respecting his mom’s situation, caring for him, and still making sure we move forward with our own life and wedding plans. I’d really appreciate advice from anyone who has been through similar—dealing with illness in the family during engagement, being the partner of an only son, or navigating South Asian family expectations while trying to plan a wedding.

How do we move forward in a way that’s compassionate but also realistic? And how do we plan when everything feels so uncertain?

Any guidance or personal experiences would mean so much. Thank you.
