My Oldest Credit Card Is a Secured Card I Can’t Upgrade — Is It Worth Closing for the $1,000 Deposit?
I’ve got a secured credit card with a $1,000 limit that I opened about eight years ago. It was my very first credit card and basically the start of my entire credit journey. For reasons I can’t really get into, I’m not able to convert it from secured to unsecured.
Since then, I’ve opened around 15 other credit cards with a combined limit of almost $100k, so this old secured card isn’t really doing much for me anymore. The issue is: I want my $1,000 deposit back. But the only way for me to get it back is to either close the account completely or lower the deposit/limit to something like $100.
My concern is that this is my oldest card by far (8 years). My next oldest card is only about 5 years old. If I close the card to get my full deposit back, how badly is that going to impact my credit score in the short or long term? And if I go the other route and withdraw $900 so the limit drops to $100, would that be a better move?
Basically, what would you guys do in this situation? Is it smarter to just close it and take whatever hit comes, or keep it open with a much smaller deposit? I’d love to hear some suggestions from people who’ve dealt with something similar.
