AITA for telling my boyfriend I am no longer attracted to him

Listener Write In

I (26M) recently told my boyfriend (29M) that I am not feeling attracted to him like I was when we first started dating.

We have been together for three and a half years. Overall we have had a great relationship, and I feel very much in love with him. Despite this our sex life has become sparse and unexciting. He tries to initiate sex on a regular basis, will try to introduce new and exciting things, and will go out of his way to pleasure me. More times than not, I will turn down his advancements because I’m not feeling in the mood. This has caused my partner to feel undesirable over time. Now he does not seem to try to initiate sex as often. He doesn’t seem to try to talk about it either because our conversations don’t seem to change our situation.

I’ve spent a lot of time reflecting on why I never seem to be in the mood. I would proclaim myself to be a hyper sexual person, but when he makes advances that part of me seems to shut off. After a lot of thought I realized that I’m simply not as attracted to him as I was when we started dating. Of course the “newness” has worn off by this point. Though that is not necessarily what has caused it. He has gained a lot of weight since we started dating. At the beginning of our relationship we both went to the gym regularly and were cautious about what we ate. Over the years he seems to have stopped caring about those things. Additionally, he doesn’t take care of himself like he used to when it comes to hygiene. For example he will got more than two days without showering or he will not brush his teeth some days. All of these things have made me lose my attraction over time.

Today I decided that I would be honest with him about the fact that I am feeling this way. I felt that being honest would be the best thing I could do. The conversation sucked as much as expected. Even though I thought about the words I would say, it ended up pouring out of me in an unorganized fashion. He became emotional by the end of the conversation. I felt like the worst person in the world. I knew it would hurt him to hear, but I also know that the continuous rejection was hurting him too. My hope was that this conversation would create open dialogue and help us get our sex life back in good shape. Instead I am fearful that I only hurt him and made the situation worse.

AITA for telling my boyfriend that I am no longer physically attracted to him like I used to be?
