The Evolution of Nano-Systems across Terran History

Technology

Nano, as it is most commonly used in the 43rd century, refers to a distributed network of nanoscopic machines present within an individual's body which support not only their biological functions, but allow for a multitude of additional capabilities considered fundamental for full integration into Terran society today.

The earliest successful attempt at a permanent integration of Nano into a living person came in 2098 with Albert C. Riley. He was diagnosed with early onset IPF (Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis) in late 2086, at just 42 years old, and joined a clinical trial for a self-replicating nano treatment, receiving his injection of nanos on 3/8/2098. While these early nano systems were extremely rudimentary, effectively only capable of managing the specific disease they were programmed to correct, they still provided the first real world example of a sustained presence of nanoscale machines within a human body.

Nano-machine technologies improved swiftly once the myriad medical uses began to receive validating results and studies were published touting the lack of long term side-effects. By the year 2122 Nan-Tech and Vivigen Systems both released commercial versions of the first multipurpose nano systems. These earliest models were far more advanced than the highly direct medical versions that were their early predecessors, capable of moderate internal computing which allowed them to augment metabolic functions, modify body compositions within a reasonable range, provide rudimentary nervous input and dampening, and continuous monitoring of a wide range of physiological functioning, when coupled with a control unit, most often worn as a wrist watch. Over the next twenty-seven years, steady improvements in both the nano machines themselves as well as the control units that guided them saw the technology become widespread among Terrans, with their adoption as an everyday essential only comparable to the knife in early history and the cellular phone after the industrial revolution. This universal adoption was cemented on August 18th, 2149, with the birth of Sarika Ianeira Valentine, the first human being to receive their nano system not through postnatal injection, but through direct in utero transference from mother to child. This method of passing nano on to one's child which allowed parents to monitor the health and wellbeing of their children from the moment of birth, became overwhelmingly popular, so much so that it became a standard feature across all companies.

The final major technological leap came in the year 2163. A member of the 'Modify Reality' movement named Brianna Ainhoa Sanders continually tinkered with her nano systems, eventually managing to integrate her personalized AI into her jail-broken Nan-Tech system. On April 7th of that year, she released the experia files for how she accomplished the feat, providing an AI integrated nano system to anyone who wished it. This upgrade effectively collapsed the Nano industry overnight, as individuals who adopted it saw their nanos gain near-unmatched efficiency and, more critically, the capacity to iteratively improve themselves. While some debate still remains, most evolutionary scientists and social theorists agree that this event marked humanity’s transition into a chimeric species, composed of both the human biological organism and a coexistent nano-organism working in tandem.

Within five years of the widespread integration of AI into nano systems, the technology had stabilized into a form barely distinguishable from the systems of the 43rd century. By 2170, the rapid self-optimization of AI integrated nano systems converged on the most efficient and biologically functional design, capable of everything from hormonal, metabolic, and physiological regulation to effective inter-nano communications and adaptive cognitive support. With this change, effectively all of human society evolved to take advantage of the new conditions, and Nano-systems have been a fundamental aspect of Terran society ever since.
