Mixing Shield Types

Has anyone tested mixing shield types (one with a large HP pool and one with a fast regen)? I don't know what effect that would have.

Let's say the small pool shield is depleted and I'm still taking fire, will it start to regen while the large pool shield is still taking hits? Or, do all shields wait to regen at the same time?

Anyone test something like this or know where to look for info on this? Is there any benifit to doing something like this?
