Nasa didn't drop the ball on anything with the photos from the HiRISE. That system was designed to photograph the surface of the planet not a moving object at a distance close to 19 *million* miles away, surrounded by a bright blob of gasses. Did they fuck up by refusing to release them due to the government shutdown, yeah 100%, but for ramrodding a square peg through a round hole they did the best they could with what they had available.
