Why are volume levels not managed on so many audiobooks?

Discussion

I am so sick of publishers not taking volume level management seriously and not being able to hear the ends of sentences or entire sentences when the reader decides that whispering is the way to go to be effective. I listen to audiobooks on long drives and it’s so hard to keep messing with the volume.

My side rant is about readers/narrators who think they are actors and need to emote, sound like they’re crying, do accents, or have breaks in their voices etc. In my opinion the acting is forced and doesn’t leave room for the reader/listener to imagine characters and characteristics for themselves. Plus this leads to the aforementioned volume level issue because people resort to whispering for pretty much all “serious” emoting. Even the much celebrated Kathleen Early does this. When she isn’t doing crying voices etc she is so good.
