Writing assignments don't prepare students for the work force and are low value.

It seems Academia is so obsessed with essay style writing assignments, however most jobs require little to no writing. One example being nursing, even at the supervisor level you’re more likely to deal with memos, reports, and summarized proposals. Nothing remotely resembling a traditional essay. Yet prospective nurses are harshly graded on their writing assignments in both the prerequisites and nurse courses. Judging a fish by how well it can climb a tree, while that would be one impressive fish; seems useless.

I used nursing as an example but there are many jobs that require academic degrees that have little to do with writing, even at the higher levels of that field.

Its seems unfair that we judge students of these trade like jobs on something they will rarely encounter.

It also seems like the product is undervalued since you spending money to learn something you not going to employ.

Since academic degrees are required for a-lot of trade like jobs now. This effectively makes college less about general enrichment and more about employment. Regardless of intent.

So what am I missing something? Do you really care about the nurses writing skills, or would you rather care about their knowledge of anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, and treatment pathology.

Writing skills vs actually being able to do the job.
