Question about passenger buckle message

Specifically 05’ e55.

If I have a passenger and they get off the car while its still running , the buckle up message appears unless I either turn the car off/on or i put the passenger seatbelt on. Is this normal? Or is my sensor about to give out? Or do I have to annoyingly listen to it for a while until the sensor realizes nobody is sitting there?
