Short story

🌧️ The Last Light in the Window 🌧️**

Every evening at 7:15, Mrs. Elara Finch lit the small lamp in the window of her little blue house. It was an old habit, one she’d kept for nearly twenty years—ever since her son, Rowan, left for his first long trip abroad.

“Just so you can always find your way home,” she used to tell him.

But the lamp had stayed lit long after the postcards stopped coming, long after the phone number stopped working, long after the war started where he had been traveling. Neighbors whispered that she should give up. Even the mailman stopped asking if she’d heard anything new.

Still, every evening at exactly 7:15, she lit the lamp.

Years passed. The house grew quiet. Dust gathered on the picture frames. Her hands trembled more each winter, making it harder to strike the match.

One cold evening, she wasn’t strong enough. The match fell to the floor, and she sat down beside it, exhausted. For the first time in two decades, the window stayed dark.

That same night, a young man—pale, thin, unfamiliar—walked slowly down the street. He stopped in front of the little blue house and stared at the darkened window with confusion… then with fear.

He had survived. He had finally found his way back. But the light that had waited for him all those years was gone.

And in that quiet doorway, with snow beginning to fall, Rowan realized a heartbreaking truth: he hadn’t come home in time.
