A Tribe Called ____?
Why do wlw become so tribal? Especially when they’re partnered? Is this an extension of adolescence in-group and out-group dynamics? Anytime I travel in the U.S. or abroad I make it a habit to visit a gay bar (preferably lesbian). Anytime I go to a gay male bar I’m guaranteed some sort of conversation but lesbian bars I tend to be left alone. Not to mention where I live in Taiwan it appears women only go out with their friend group and/or partner and do not talk to anyone outside of the group. Just tons of tiny pockets of isolated conversations throughout the building.
At least for the bar scene, I believe this is happening b/c the environment is more queer friendly and you don’t have to go to a lesbian bar to feel safe. But the drastic difference in social opportunities between men and women is still shocking to me. I just wanna hang with other queer wlw and maybe gain a friend or two. (Somewhat related, why do lesbian bars hire male bartenders?)
