My husband’s grandparents passed away, and no one has paid their property taxes in years. Can we step in?

Location: Nebraska

My husband’s grandparents passed away in 2022 and 2023. Since then, his aunt and uncle have both been residing in the home. They have absolutely trashed and neglected the place. We do not have much of a relationship with them because of unrelated issues. They routinely do not pay the bills and have not paid the property taxes in now almost three years.

We are able to see that some real estate company has now paid the past two years of property taxes and are assuming that they are planning on paying this year’s to be able to take the home. We also can see that the home is still in his deceased grandparent’s names still, not his mom, aunt, or uncle’s.

The home is worth $350,000. We usually keep out of family drama, but this is a LOT of money that they are going to lose anyway because none of them have enough to pay this year’s property taxes. We are of course willing to pay the property taxes and are the only ones in the family with enough money to do so. There was no will, and they have sold everything in the home to buy drugs so this is literally the last thing belonging to my husband’s grandparents. We adopted his three nieces from foster care in 2023 and are about to have our first biological baby. We have tried talking with his mom and aunt/uncle, but they just rant about how they’re going to get their portion of money from the house.

Is there anyway we can get the house by paying the property taxes instead of the real estate company? We don’t know where to start since it’s in his deceased grandparent’s names.

Thanks in advance!!
