My friend (23F) is upset my boyfriend (25M)is buying me an expensive gift, why is she so upset?
Me (24F) and my friend (23F) have been talking about Christmas as it is coming up soon and I told her how upset I would be if my boyfriend (25M) didn’t try to go all out. In context we’ve been dating for almost 5 years and I’m so super materialistic with him because I know we’re still young but he recently gave his friend $600 for a video game out of the blue. I then told my friend that I was upset because he has never spent that much money on me and I honestly didn’t even know he had so much money that he could just do that. Well for Christmas he spiked the surprise that he’s getting me an $1,300 bike that I really wanted. I told my friend because I was so excited that he has been paying attention to the things I’ve been looking at and interested in. My friend just came out of the blue and said “that honestly sounds like a bad financial investment, why aren’t you guys saving up for a house or student loans?” I was so taken back because my boyfriend doesn’t have student loans for one and two were not getting a house anytime soon as I’m going to go to med school and we don’t know where we’ll end up. I told her that and she kept pressuring the issue of “oh that’s just a lot of money and I think it’s insane to spend that much money, but I forgot you guys come from wealthy families”. The conversation just turned into a pity party for her and how she can’t spend that much money so I guess me talking about this made her uncomfortable and insecure. I ended up apologizing for triggering her but I still think it’s really weird she said all that. I don’t know if I should talk to her about it or just kinda back off. I don’t want to feel bad about the financial privileges I was born into it when she also has a great job and seems to not be needing of anything so I don’t know where this came from.
