Converting to match lit?

I have an outdoor natural gas insert fireplace on my patio, no glass or doors and vented with a chimney. The contractor installed it and used an insert with an electric start (wall switch, pilot, thermopile, gas valve underneath, etc). Given the elements the thermopile/pilot keeps failing. Is it safe for me to simply convert the burner to one that doesn’t need all the electrical components, and use a new match lit kit? Essentially bypassing the gas valve and thermopile? Or something with less components that won’t wear down easily? Thanks
