The Cost
I woke up in the middle of the night. I didn’t want to— It just happened. Lately I just have not been feeling right. I want to feel better— I just don’t. I thought it was you kneeling by my bed. I know it wasn’t— I should know better. I held your hand and fell asleep instead. I adjusted my chin— Resting it upon our hands. My alarm clock woke me and you were gone. So was your jacket And your purse. I remember holding hands as I yawn. I crack a smile And then I stand. Checking boxes as I go through my day. Some hard— Some so-so. Surely it’s time for this day to give way. Maybe I’ll see her— Maybe I won’t. But it gives me the chance to feel okay. And it’s worth it Even if it hurts.
