How to shift from SDE → Applied Scientist (ML) at Amazon or elsewhere?

Hey everyone,

I recently joined Amazon as an SDE-1, and most of my current work is related to app development. A bit about my background: I’m from a good college and during my undergrad I worked on several ML-related projects, nothing extraordinary, but I have decent hands-on experience and genuine interest in the field. I really want to move into ML/Applied Science roles. Does anyone here know how realistic it is to internally transition from SDE → Applied Scientist at Amazon? If it’s not feasible internally, I’d love advice on how to switch to ML roles in general when your official background is SDE.

Any suggestions, resources, or personal experiences would be super helpful.
