Do I have a case against my dad?

I've never made a post like this so please bear with me. Location: Rhode Island When I was 19, so about 4 years ago my dad told me he needed to put the energy bill in my name or else we wouldn't have any electricity. I was really anxious about this but I trusted that my dad had my best interest in mind. So I let him. All the contact information was his and as far as I knew he was paying the bills. We eventually moved out of the apartment when I was 22.

A couple weeks ago a new debt popped up on my credit karma thingy. $3300 from ri energy but I've gathered it's been passed to collections. For the past 2 weeks my father said he would help me figure it out because he knew I was incredibly anxious and lost when it came to this.

Today he has told me it was my responsibility to pay since at the time I had not been paying him as much as he wanted in rent. Though I was paying the Wi-Fi bill and also paying for the two elderly cats my family had (one of which had cancer and the other needed his thyroid medicine compounded which was quite expensive).

It feels like a shot in the dark but I'm curious if there are any types of legal action I can take to get this debt expunged or for my father to pay it.
