Needles for Socks Question

Hello! Newbie knitter here: I’d like to start knitting socks but I’m having some trouble with needle sizing. :(

What size needles do sock yarns usually take? I unfortunately cannot spend too much money on knitting tools and would ideally like to buy just one pair of circulars that will allow me to make many, many socks… is that something that sock-making masters usually do?

I currently have a skein or two of the Patons Kroy sock yarn, which asks for 2.75 mm (US 2) needles, so that’s what I’m currently looking for, but so far they’ve been a bit tricky to find, and when I do spot them, they’re a bit pricey 😔. So if there’s a better size option (I’ve seen a lot of the 2.25 mm?) I’d be open to hearing about it!
