More Controversial Gw2 Takes

[Discussion]

There was a thread a few days ago asking about some controversial Gw2 takes, I was a bit late to contributing and wanted to bring up a couple of what I think are actual controversial takes that I have had about Gw2 for a while now.

I am not saying these should be changed, at this point it's way to far along in the game's lifecycle for it, but these are thoughts I have had as someone who has played this game since Beta.

  1. Monetization - I think Gw2 would be better off with a subscription model. Most games with vertical progression in each expansion have you grinding for player power every patch or expansion and then sprinkle in cosmetics into the game itself or their store, F2P or not. However, Gw2's horizontal progression model doesn't support that. The only content available to this game is cosmetics and QOL, which just so happens to be in direct competition with their monetization model. It's a constant battle of "what should go into the gem store" vs "what should be available to grind from a collection or boss/meta". I would gladly purchase an expansion for $25 and then pay another $15 for a month subscription if it meant there were a ton of new mount skins, bag and build slots littered in the new content that you could only get from actually doing the content.

  2. Holy Trinity - This game largely failed at completely eliminating the holy trinity that you normally find in MMOs. They should have just stuck to using it, the game has some of the best build customization I have seen in an MMO and it fits perfectly with defined roles like the trinity. In a game like FFXIV, if I want to play a Paladin and do non group content (there isn't much in that game anyway) then I would be stuck doing it with Tank DPS, meanwhile in Gw2 I could use the push of a button to swap between my full tank Dragonhunter and my full DPS Dragonhunter. This also hurts things like Group Finder because they "sorta" have roles but no way to really define it.

Those are a couple of my, I think, actually controversial opinions on this game. I didn't see either of these touched on much in the other thread and was curious what others might think about them.
