What’s a good time to follow up after an interview?

Did a phone screen on November 11. The hiring manager said to not expect to hear much until early December because they were going on vacation the week of the 17th. They got back from vacation on the 24th, but had Thanksgiving and the Friday after off.

Now that all that has passed, how long would be a good amount of time to wait to follow up assuming I don’t hear back? I’m thinking of waiting until this Friday or next Monday to follow up.

This job is one I really want badly. I know I shouldn’t act/be desperate, but it’s one that comes with benefits and I desperately need health insurance. There’s that voice in the back of my mind that keeps thinking that the hiring manager could have already picked someone during the few days they were in office. I know that it makes no logical sense especially given the timeline the hiring manager gave, but I guess I’m just that desperate and hate being in limbo.
