Research vs. Industry?

Advice

I posted this before but I didn’t get many opinions, please bear with me.

Hey, I’m having a bit of a hard time figuring out what I should be doing and I just want some advice. I’m currently in my last semester, and in my college, an internship is mandatory. For reference, I am a software engineer planning to branch into more data engineering work.

Here is my issue: I want to do interdisciplinary research, specifically research in more scientific field, with just aiding in computation work. It was always my dream to work in a research lab, and due to some unfortunate life events, I ended up taking this major as a safe plan and I’m trying to make the most of it. I don’t want to be apart of academics, I simply want to be more involved in the more practical aspects of research. My advisor suggested I do my internship in my university as a research project with a professor if I want to go into research, but I am not sure if this would be better or joining the industry I desire to do research on (eg. chemical industry) as a software/data engineer for my internship.

Not sure if it’s relevant, but my original aim was to do Engineering Physics in the hope of working around spacecrafts and such, or do more research on astrophysics, but that is not a very popular or regarded industry where I am living in.
