New Jersey is forcing disabled adults to accept strangers in their homes - even when it's unsafe
My daughter Ashley survived trauma in 2015 and can only accept one trusted caregiver - me. Now NJ's Division of Developmental Disabilities is enforcing a 40-hour weekly cap that forces families to hire multiple caregivers, even when it's dangerous for the person with disabilities.
I started a petition because this policy strips away the right to self-direction. Ashley can't tolerate strangers, can't communicate when scared, and needs consistency to stay safe. Yet DDD says I can only be paid for 40 hours while still requiring me to provide all the care - essentially forcing unpaid labor while demanding I bring unfamiliar people into our home.
What would you want someone to do if this was your family member who couldn't safely accept multiple caregivers? If this matters to you too, consider signing and sharing.
